At last! At long last, I’ve finished this dress, and I love it. I’m also tired of buttons.

Here’s the timeline: Jesse bought me this pattern (Ceylon, from Colette) last Valentine’s Day. I bought the fabric last April at Bolt. It’s Kaffe Fassett Ikat Stripe, in Purple. Then both sat in my To Do pile for month after month, until finally this February I picked it up and made a test (that I loved).

And now, the real thing! (These pictures were taken at night and lightened later, so I apologize for the grainy darkness of them. Also, I missed a button. It’s there, it’s just not buttoned. Awesome.)

I really love this style, and the fitted swing of the dress. The waist fits me so well, and the length is great. Now, in my test dress the top only gaped a little bit, but this version seems to have changed a bit, because it gapes a lot. Sigh. I’m not that good at fitting. I might have to fiddle with it some, and try to fix it.

I’ll still wear it and I’ll love it anyway because that’s the only negative in this dress. I feel it could easily segue into any of these personalities and locales:

  • Librarian, as shown.
  • The Wild West, as in Zane Grey’s Riders of the Purple Sage.
  • A walk in the Jardin des Tuileries, with a feathered hat and a parasol.
  • A film noir mystery hunt for a missing falcon and a fedora.
  • A train ride on the South Shore Line to Chicago, circa 1930. See here.

There are a lot of options, as you can see. Today I chose “mild-mannered secretary in an office environment.” (I went to work.) The dress does fit that description, but the other options sound way more fun. Phooey.

Suki wanted to help with our photoshoot, but she didn’t want to look at the camera. Silly cat.

And now I’m off to imagine more settings for my new dress! Suggestions welcome. Is it a movie with Humphrey Bogart, or Cary Grant, would you say?
